Our Top 5 Picks for Palm Springs Modernism Week 2022
It’s the most magical time of year again here in Palm Springs (and no we don’t mean Christmas!) Modernism Week’s annual 11-day festival is upon us (February 17th-27th) featuring more than 350 events including the Palm Springs Modernism Show & Sale, tours of iconic homes in more than 30 neighborhoods, and the popular Signature Home Tour on both weekends. One of the things we love most about Modernism Week is the sheer variety of activities to do, beyond what we have listed below you will also find a classic car show, garden tours, nightly parties, and a special series of compelling and informative talks. All events are open to the public, and many events are free or low cost!
The mission of Modernism Week is to celebrate and foster an appreciation of midcentury architecture and design, as well as contemporary thinking in these fields, by encouraging education, preservation, and sustainable modern living as represented in the greater Palm Springs area - which we find truly fabulous and consider ourselves lucky to be able to be part of. The F10 family considers Palm Springs to be our home, and we take part in Modernism Week in a variety of ways, as locals, attendees and vendors both hosting and catering a variety of events throughout the week. It is a special celebration that really showcases what makes Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley such a unique place to live.
We scoured the expansive list of events, tours, parties, and workshops to narrow it down to what we consider to be the top 5 must-see and do activities at Modernism Week 2022.
1. Home Tour: Seventies Sackley
Step through an expansive formal entry way to take in this stunning 1975 Palm Springs residence by noted architect Stan Sackley in the prestigious Indian Canyons neighborhood. Boasting deep midcentury roots and distinctive architectural styles, the home was recently reimagined by interior designers Michael Ostrow and Roger Stoker of Grace Home Furnishings.

. Vera: The Art and Life of an Icon with Susan Seid and Trina Turk
Vera Neumann was an unlikely revolutionary–her tiny five-foot-tall frame typically dressed in mod tunics and a bold scarf and armed with a quick wit but a shy demeanor. But Vera, the innovator of cross-licensing, was the most successful female entrepreneur of her time and created the first true lifestyle brand. Vera is a celebration of the lifework of famed artist, tastemaker, entrepreneur, and American fashion industry icon Vera Neumann. Susan Seid and Trina Turk discuss her legacy.

3. 007 Cocktail Party - A Night for Preservation
Clink your cocktail glasses for a glitzy James Bond-themed cocktail party and tour the spectacular Dinah Shore residence by legendary architect Donald Wexler. Save Iconic Architecture puts a spotlight on the importance of mindful preservation and celebrating our important architectural history - delicious bites will be provided by F10 Creative and a portion of the proceeds will benefit Palm Springs preservation efforts.

4. The Creative Process and the Ego
Architects have been granted the responsibility to impact communities and cultural progress, through the flexing of creative muscles. Who has given architects this role in society, and what have they done with it? Anthony Poon, AIA, examines ego and arrogance within the architectural process. He also introduces his latest novel, Death by Design at Alcatraz, an architectural thriller exploring vanity, redemption and the artistic journey.

5. Preserving Los Angeles: A Kaleidoscope Tour of LA’s Built Heritage
Author and photographer Ken Bernstein and Stephen Schafer share an engaging visual tour of Los Angeles’s extending beyond well-known Midcentury Modern dwellings by renowned architects, Preserving Los Angeles highlights hidden Modernist gems that will surprise even longtime Angelenos, while showcasing the city’s rich and varied built heritage, from bungalow courts and roadside landmarks to modest structures that reflect the social and cultural history of the city’s diverse communities.
