Say HELLO to HIGH-pie Located Inside The Top Gun House in Oceanside, CA
Who doesn’t love a delicious, made-to-order, fresh out of the oven mini pie a la mode? No one! That’s who! Say hello to the newest member of the F10 Family and Tara Lazar’s latest venture - HIGH-Pie, a dessert-focused eatery located in Oceanside California inside the famous Top Gun House (more on that later!)
High Pie’s menu is centered around its namesake, an individual hand pie filled with a compote made from seasonal, locally picked fruits, in All-American flavors such as apple and cherry. The menu features Tara’s creative take on mini pie a-la-mode, filled with house-made mascarpone ice cream, fried, and then baked to order. (To answer your question, yes, it is as good as it sounds!) The mini hand pies are served with a choice of dipping sauces including Charlie’s Chocolate, Government Cheese, Lemon Curd and Sea Salt Caramel. Each hand pie is served on a popsicle stick and comes with a choice of dipping sauces that include Charlie’s Chocolate, Government Cheese, Lemon Curd and Sea Salt Caramel.
High Pie’s to-go offerings will be bundled into creatively designed house-shaped collectible boxes in packs of 12 + 24. All High Pies are naturally gluten-free, made with Thomas Keller’s Cup4Cup flour. To complement the pies, the bakery serves hot coffee alongside an inventive take on New Orleans-style iced coffee with sweet milk.
The Historic Top Gun house
While the 500-square-foot house was originally built in 1887 by Dr. Henry Graves, it’s famed for its use in the popular 1986 movie Top Gun where it was the oceanfront residence of Tom Cruise’s co-star Kelly McGillis and the set for quite a few memorable (steamy) scenes. As the new home of High Pie, the house maintains its original blue Victorian cottage exterior, with billowing sheer curtains on the windows lining an outdoor porch with a hanging swing.
Tara and her creative team embraced the history of the home, film nostalgia, and the American military with a fresh touch of “New Americana.” The renovated interior is adorned with bold, retro signage, Victorian-era panels, and an upholstered fireplace. Fun design touches such as Top Gun set photos, movie memorabilia, historical imagery of both Oceanside and the Graves House, vintage furniture, and more adore the space.
The serving counter has deli-style display cases and shelves, and pies are featured on a Willy-Wonka-esque conveyor belt. Not to mention the refurbished Yamaha Kawasaki Ninja ZX900 motorcycle (just like Tom Cruise’s in the movie) is an Instagram-perfect prop for guests upon entering the property.
