It’s been a little over 4 years since Frank Ocean’s first album, channel ORANGE, was released. It’s also been over a year since Frank Ocean’s newest album Boys Don’t Cry was supposed to leave the dark cave in which all of Ocean’s music hides and enter the world of entertainment. However, it’s August 2016 and Ocean’s album is nowhere to be found. Christopher Breaux has disappointed us time and time again, making us wonder if there’s even a point in waiting so anxiously for this album to drop. The real question is: Will it ever be released?
It was rumored that Boys Don’t Cry would be released yesterday, August 5th. But it’s now apparent that this was just a rumor, as the album is still nowhere to be found. Now, November is being thrown in the air as a possible guess for the album’s release, but there’s no way to trust what’s being said anymore. We’ve been lied to so many times.
Throughout all of this madness, Ocean has played it pretty low key. He hasn’t performed anytime recently. The only social media he partakes in is Tumblr, so a search for him on Twitter or Instagram won’t do you any good. In November 2014, Ocean dropped a teaser snippet of the song Memrise on Tumblr, and then disappeared from the music world again. The only real public appearance he’s made was on February 11, 2016 at Kanye West’s TLOP listening party/Yeezy Season 3 fashion show. Following this, he appeared on Kanye’s TLOP track Wolves.
Ocean recently posted a picture of a library check-out card with due dates written all over it, showing us that he’s fully aware of the pain we are experiencing whilst awaiting his album.
As a huge Frank Ocean fan (if you couldn’t tell already), I’ve been wondering why he would leave us hanging for this long. If the album is complete, why hold off? What exactly is he waiting for?
It wasn’t until I did a little Google search for Frank Ocean that I realized what all of this was about. Frank Ocean’s name is headlining. There are thousands of news reports and articles surrounding his new album. Look for yourself:
Forbes even went so far to create a graph that illustrates the fact that Ocean’s social activity has spiked. His page views on Wikipedia have increased, as well as the amount of people talking about him on Facebook and Twitter. He’s been a top trending search on Google recently and his Vevo and Youtube video views are off the charts.
Ocean is directly in the spotlight, right where he needs to be when his album finally drops. I don’t believe that Frank Ocean is a huge procrastinator. He (or someone from his label, that is) is being strategic. And it’s working. Ocean’s album will soar when it is released, whether it’s good or not. But knowing Frank Ocean, it will be exceptional. And beautiful. And everything I’ve ever wanted in life. I suppose we’ll just have to listen to channel ORANGE (or Lonny Breaux Collection and nostalgia, ULTRA if you’re a huge fan like me) repeatedly until the day comes.
